Amazon recently opened a new fulfillment center in Shakopee, Minnesota. This fulfillment center stores products like books, CD’s and small electronics, and be machine sortable. What does that mean? According to a quote in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal  from Mike Grella, director of economic development at Amazon,”…robots will pick up the items from a multi-level racking system, put them in a tote and deliver them to employees at ergonomic workstations who will pack and ship orders. …The equipment will give Amazon 50 percent more storage capacity than a traditional distribution center.”

Cool technology, right?

But this new facility also means big news for sellers who use Amazon’s Fulfillment by Amazon service. The Shakopee facility is the first Amazon fulfillment center in Minnesota. For FBA sellers, this might mean that your inventory will be stored in this new facility, giving you sales tax nexus in a brand new state.

Now that the facility is open, here’s what you need to know about the Shakopee, MN Amazon Fulfillment Center.

What Minnesota online sellers need to know about sales tax

Minnesota’s Department of Revenue states that, among many other criteria, “having an office; distribution, sales, or sample room location; warehouse or other place of business in Minnesota, either directly or by a subsidiary” constitutions sales tax nexus.
