2026 sales tax holidays
by January 15, 2026
For consumers, sales tax holidays feel like a win—a rare chance to snag back-to-school gear, emergency supplies, or energy-efficient appliances without the added sales tax charge. But for businesses, these “holidays” are anything but a vacation.
While these holidays are designed to boost retail activity, they introduce a layer of complexity to your compliance strategy. Missing a date or misapplying an exemption doesn’t just frustrate customers; it can lead to costly filing errors and audit risks. Because many states require annual legislative approval or adjust their dates year-to-year, staying compliant requires constant vigilance.
We’ve compiled the most up-to-date schedule for 2026 below. Since several states have yet to finalize their specific windows, we recommend bookmarking this page. Our team will be updating this guide in real-time as new dates and categories are officially announced throughout the year.
